Trials in Nephrology: EMA, Academia and Industry in dialogue

Prior to the Opening Ceremony of the 54th ERA EDTA Congress in Madrid, a rather unique and special session will take place bringing together for the first time speakers from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), academia and pharmaceutical industry (June 3, 2017, 13.00 – 15.30 h). Backgrounds of this session are the scarcity of randomized controlled trials and difficulties in creating study settings in Nephrology with regard to promising novel treatment approaches. These issues are due to several obstacles including the high comorbidity rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, the relative rarity of late CKD stages and some renal disorders, and uncertainties about the validity of surrogate endpoints and biomarkers. Nephrology is currently always close the bottom of most listings with regard to the availability of solid clinical study data which are needed in order to establish the best possible treatment approaches.
